wheel Welcome to Big Rock Pottery! Thank you for visiting my website. I am Nancy Jonnum, the potter of Big Rock Pottery. I have been throwing functional pottery on the wheel for many years. About ten years ago I began adding sculpture to my repertoire. Both types of clay work give me great pleasure, and I am unable to choose one and discontinue the other.

When I form pots on the wheel, I design and create each piece individually. I glaze them and fire them two or more times. They are fired to more than 2200 degrees so they are safe for use with food, microwaves, dishwashers and ovens. Some of my favorite functional objects to make are lidded jars of all sizes. These are becoming more and more sculptural, as well as useful.

I also hand build sculptures of animals, birds, fish and other creatures. These creatures are influenced by my love of the natural world and usually feature a touch of humor. Sometimes I fire the creatures in a saggar inside my kiln along with sawdust, manure, leaves, seaweed and other organic materials. Other sculptures may be colored with a clay slip called terra sigilatta. These works are fired to a high temperature so that they may be used outdoors or in.

I hope you will enjoy visiting my gallery. There you will see some of my newest creations, along with some old favorites.
